Childcare

In support of ASPB’s focus on equity, diversity and inclusion, ASPB will provide subsidized childcare at Plant Biology 2024.

ASPB is working with a licensed provider, Aloha Sitters/Keiki Sitters, to provide childcare services at the convention center. The deadline to register for on-site childcare without time restriction* is May 8, 2024. Children up to 18 years are accepted, but most childcare participants are in the 6-month to 12-year age range. The cost for childcare is:

  • First child: $10 per child per hour
  • Second child: $8 per hour
  • Third child or more: $6 per hour

*ASPB is required to confirm the hours of operation and staffing levels with Keiki Sitters, on May 9. ASPB will confirm hours based on reservations submitted before May 8, 2024. Additional reservations will be accommodated on an as-available basis, based on established hours and compliant with recommended staff-to-child ratios. ASPB will post the final hours on this page, but not on the conference mobile app due to safety considerations.

Childcare Reservation Process

After you have registered to attend Plant Biology 2024, return to members.aspb.org and log in with the username and password you used to register for Plant Biology 2024. You will automatically be redirected to the ASPB store. On the top menu, select the Plant Biology 2024 Childcare catalogue.

From there, select the First Child item and enter the number of hours you want to purchase for that child. A form will pop up where you can provide needed details for that child, including the specific hours you want to reserve. Make sure this matches the number of hours you enter as “quantity.”

If needed, repeat for additional children. Once done adding all children, check out and pay for the reservation.

Childcare Reservation Cancellation Policy

A childcare reservation can be changed or cancelled until May 8, 2024. If you cancel by that date, you will receive a full refund.

Beginning May 9, no refunds are available as ASPB will have confirmed childcare staffing levels. However, based on availability, you may be able to adjust the specific hours you use childcare services.

About the Childcare Provider

ASPB has contracted with Keiki Sitters for hands-on childcare management at Plant Biology 2024.

All Keiki Sitters are CPR/first aid certified, have clean background checks, are 22 years of age or older, and have a minimum of 5 years childcare experience. Keiki Sitters recruits recent graduates or students from local universities and community colleges who are majoring in early childhood development, education or nursing.

Keiki Sitters uses a professional sign-in/out system and will efficiently contact parents when their children need them. Parents are emailed photo collages so they can see the learning and fun that took place. Activities include games, arts and crafts, reading aloud, and more, with Keiki Sitters providing all the toys, supplies and supervision needed to keep children entertained and safe for the duration of the event.

Family Space at the Convention Center

Based on the location, ASPB understands Plant Biology attendees may bring family members to Honolulu.

With that in mind, in addition to providing licensed childcare services at the convention center, ASPB will provide a room where families may meet and gather during the event. Please note ASPB will not staff this room, and children under 18 may not be in this space without a parent or guardian. The room will be equipped with round tables, chairs and a water station.

Quiet Room

ASPB understands at a big conference, there are times when people need a quiet space to decompress, pray or work. A quiet room will be available at the convention center for the duration of the meeting. Please note ASPB will not staff this room. We ask those using the room to adhere to the quiet rule and refrain from using the space to hold meetings (in person or virtual) or phone conversations.
